You deserve to be called by your name, even if it’s spelled a little different or is difficult to pronounce. Saying (or at least genuinely attempting) to say someone’s name is the easiest and simplest way to show respect. And, even when there is an intricate and complex name that you’re faced with, a genuine and honest attempt at pronouncing it correctly is still necessary. 

Consider this. There was probably some point where words like dictionary, prosciutto and hors’ doeuvres were difficult to pronounce, but you know what we do to work through it, we adapt and learn. Since each of our names are personal and unique to us, taking a moment to be respectful and pronounce someone’s the right way is essential. 

Now, perhaps you have a really simple name that is easy to pronounce and no one ever gets it wrong. If so, lucky you! Many of us have names that are a tad intricate and require a little thought before actually verbalizing them. Since it’s your name, you know how it is pronounced, but 99% of the rest of world may not know this.

You Messed It Up

At some point in your life, you’ll mispronounce someone’s name. And when you’re notified that you have, simply apologize and pleasantly ask them if they can teach you how to say it accurately. 

Someone Else Messed Up

So, what do you do if someone mispronounces your name? How do you correct them without seeming or feeling like you are being mean? After someone mispronounces your name, kindly say, “people often have an issue pronouncing my name, it’s actually pronounced ________”. (With a smile)

Help Them Out

If you know that your name is very difficult to say, perhaps you can find something that your name rhymes with to help people and to alleviate the frustration of hearing your name being mispronounced.

Scarlet Says…It’s perfectly fine to correct someone on the mispronunciation of your name. More than likely, they don’t know how to pronounce it, but one pleasant verbal correction could turn everything around. Also, don’t miss out on your opportunity to show respect by getting someone’s name right.
