Show Me The Money! – The Etiquette in Finances

Aisha Taylor

It’s that time again, and you’re trying to find the perfect gift for everyone on your list.  However, be careful not to overspend during the holiday season.  Manage your spending by conducting a strategy session before you start shopping.  This session should address the following:

  1. Your disposable income for the holidays:  Keep in mind that this disposable income should include gifts and also expenses related to all events/parties that you expect to attend.
  2. Identify the people on your Holiday gift list: Once you determine the list, stick to it.  Remember you are strategic shopping.  Try to find non-monetary ways to celebrate those who are special, but didn’t make the gift list.
  3. Determine the budget per person:  Establish the budget based on your relationship and their interests.  The value they will get from the gift is not necessarily correlated to the amount you spend; therefore the budgets do not have to be equal.

Understanding these 3 items is crucial.  You’re less likely to overspend if you’re shopping with a plan.

Good luck!
